SENATE RESOLUTION
SENATE RESOLUTION
As a result of the vibrant UJ Petition campaign, on Wednesday 29 September 2010 UJ’s Senate (one of its highest decision making bodies) voted not to continue its long-standing relationship with BGU in its present form. Guided by, inter alia, the principle of “solidarity with any oppressed population”, the Senate Resolution set binding conditions on the agreement to be fulfilled within 6 months, failing which relations between the two institutions will fully terminate automatically. On 23 March 2011, BGU had failed to meet the conditions - UJ's Senate voted to uphold the Resolution thereby ending the institutional relationship.
LETTERS AND STATEMENTS OF SUPPORT
The call for UJ to end collaboration with BGU has generated support from a variety of sectors. South African and Palestinian academic groups, trade unions, civil society organisations and student representative bodies have written to UJ to express their support for a principled decision not to continue the relationship.
